6 Cotton (Egypt)
The Egyptian crop is reckoned in " cantars," a cantar being equal to 98-lb. The Egyptian bale contains about 7 cantars, or 700-lb. Egypt being practically a rainless country, is dependent on the River Nile for its water supply. The river annually overflows its banks, and deposits a rich layer of silt and mud over the cotton growing lands. Within recent years a vast amount of money has been spent on perfecting an irrigation system, by which a continuous supply of water is available all the year round. This has made it possible to extend the country's cotton growing area very largely. Egyptian cotton ranks next to Sea Islands in point of quality, and is used for the world's finer cotton goods. The commercial varieties are Mitafifi, Abassi, Joanovich, Ashmouni, Nubari, Sakellaridis and Assil. Of these, Sakellaridis, a cotton of quite recent growth, is now the most important. Mitafifi (or " Brown Egyptian ") is the average quality of Egyptian cotton, having a staple of about 13/8-in, in length, and is noted for its regularity, both of length and colour. It derives its name from a village in the province of Galulbia, where it was first grown about thirty years ago. It is now cultivated in Lower Egypt and the Nile Delta. There has, in recent years, been a falling off in quality of this cotton, and it is now less extensively grown than formerly. -
7 Brown Cotton
An early maturing cotton from Mississippi; has a short staple. -
8 Cotton (Assil)
Assil (or Assil Afifi) is another recent vairety, or rather it is an endeavour to recover an old variety that is disappearing. The word Assil is Arabic meaning 'thoroughbred,' and the Assil Afifi is pure Afifi cotton. It is very strong and regular and although up to the present there has not been a large quantity grown, it will probably be increased, and should prove a very useful cotton to the users of brown Egyptian. -
9 Cotton Rust
An imperfection in raw cotton plants. It appears first as a blood-red spot on the upper surface of the leaf. Myriads of tiny red spiders or mites, which are too small to be seen by the naked eye, spread rapidly over the leaves and suck the sap out. The leaf turns red, becomes folded, then turns brown and dry, and finally drops off. The disease starts at the bottom of the plant and spreads upwards until often only the bare stalk is left, when the plant dies. -
10 Brown Egyptian
Cotton having a long, clean and easily worked staple, of golden-brown colour, the fibre is tough and very strong, but shorter and coarser than Gallini. -
11 Cotton (Abassi)
Abassi. This is the whitest of the Egyptian cottons, and has been grown since about 1890 in the Delta of the Nile. It has a long, fine fibre, but has not quite the length of the brown variety. It seemed a few years ago as if Abassi were about to disappear, but a small acreage is still planted with the variety annually. -
12 Cotton (Joanovich)
Joanovich. This is one of the best of Egyptian cottons. It was first grown in 1897 and was produced by artificial selection, from the brown variety Mitafifi. It is fine, strong, clean, silky, and has a staple of about 11/2-in. in length. Spinners have recently shown a preference for the new variety, Sakellaridis, and the growth of Joanovich has been much reduced.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Cotton (Joanovich)

14 Brown Sour
The American term for the souring process in bleaching, and consists of passing the cloth through tanks of water containing sulphuric or hydrochloric acid or sometimes both. This souring process counteracts the action of any caustic soda or lime that may remain in the cotton fibre after liming. -
